Welcome to IntranetWare's global electronic village. To become a
successful CNE, you need to expand your understanding of the Novell LAN
beyond the server, beyond the NDS tree, to the "collective whole." Let
me explain.
Since the beginning of time, people have had an uncontrollable need
to communicate. Our nature drives us to exchange ideas, information, and
opinions. Without communication, we can't learn. Without learning, we can't
grow. And without growth, we shrivel up and disappear. Creativity and communication
drive the human race more than any other force. They are essential elements
of life.
Networking is the ultimate level of communication. It transcends words
and pictures to provide a pathway for thoughts, ideas, and dreams. Networking
as it exists today is the result of millions of years of evolution and
growth. And the fun is just beginning.
As we near the end of the 20th Century, computers have begun to permeate
every aspect of our lives. In the 1970s, they brought us disco. In the
1980s, they converted the "little black book" into an electronic Rolodex.
And in the 1990s, computers are used in cars, video games, digital watches,
and coffee machines. The world is shrinking at an amazing rate, and networking
is everywhere. It is essentially the foundation of our future growth.
So ... What Does The Future Of Networking Hold?
Undoubtedly, the world is becoming a very small global village. In the
new information age, humans will become very big fish in a very small pond.
With the advent of space travel, we will yearn to share our message with
life-forms far, far away. As the galaxy opens up to us, we'll become small
fish in a gigantic pond. The next challenge will be to network the galaxy
-- creating a galactic village.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Today, we're going to explore
Novell's solution for global connectivity: IntranetWare.
What Is IntranetWare?
I'm glad you asked. It's actually more of a solution than a product.
IntranetWare extends the Novell LAN to include private intranets and/or
the globally shared Internet. The great thing about IntranetWare is that
it's fully modular by design. It includes a server-based operating system
(NetWare 4.11), Novell Directory Services, and a variety of intranet/Internet
products. Additionally, IntranetWare is fully compatible with existing
NetWare servers, applications, and hardware.
What's So Great About Intranets?
Intranets allow you to leverage existing Internet technology to create
a secure private corporate network. Private intranets rely on a common
user interface (browser) to provide access to local and shared information.
Additionally, paperless communications are encouraged and centrally available
information can be accessed 24 hours a day. But probably the most exciting
feature is the availability of multimedia -- that is, data, text, audio,
and video simultaneously available through a single browser. Wow!
What About the Internet?
If your company needs to extend beyond a private intranet, you may consider
extending your presence to the public Internet. The World Wide Web can
deliver a variety of information including product or company information,
software updates, press releases, customer support, ordering information,
online publications, merchandising, advertising, and/or broadcasting. This
is all accomplished using a myriad of Internet services including World
Wide Web graphical browsing (HTTP), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), Telnet,
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), and streaming.
How Does Novell Do It?
IntranetWare is Novell's enterprise solution for building your global
electronic village. It consists of five main components:
NetWare 4.11 Operating
System
IntranetWare TCP/IP
IPX/IP Gateway
The Novell Web Server
FTP Services for IntranetWare
NetWare 4.11 is the server-based OS (operating system)
component of IntranetWare that provides file, print, and NDS services.
It also is the foundation of Novell's CNE program. It does not, however,
provide any intranet/Internet connectivity. For global villaging, you'll
need to implement one or more of the other IntranetWare solutions. They
are grouped into a product known as Novell's Internet Access Server (NIAS).
To install NIAS, use the simple instructions in Novell's CNE Study Guide
for IntranetWare/NetWare 4.11, pages 1148-1150.
Once you've installed Novell's Internet Access Server, you're ready
to explore its many wondrous solutions. That's the goal of CNE Course 540

everything you need to know to build a successful intranet using IntranetWare
. . . and to help you become a CNE. Addionally, we're using the information
