SASCA 1997 Finals Report

The SASCA (Swedish Autosound Challenge Association) finals for 1997 were held, as is traditional, during the first weekend of November (Oct 31-Nov 2) at the Stockholm International Fairs convention center. 120 cars were invited to the Finals to compete for the 36 trophies in 12 classes.

I shot two rolls of film at the event; here are some of these pictures showing some of the most interesting installs. The complete results from the Finals can be found on the SASCA home pages.

These pictures are all size optimized JPEGs so that they will load quickly; however they should be reasonably legible.

These pictures show a very nicely turned out 1955 VW Bug, using all Phoenix Gold equipment. The installation was done by HiFi-Klubben, the Swedish distributor of Phoenix Gold, Denon, Boston Acoustics, Cerwin-Vega and Soundstream.

ZX amps, ZeroPoint front stage and Xmax subwoofers. Hmm, wonder how the driver's knees would look after an accident...

The series of pictures below shows a BMW M5 installed by hot rod builder Thomas Westman. The install work is simply astonishing, although it may seem a bit of an overkill in certain areas. Thomas placed 3rd in his class at the Finals, a pretty good reminder that you need musicality as well as an amazing install to win.

McIntosh subwoofers with color matched baskets. Head unit face plate with McIntosh logo etched into it.

Left: Custom made, NC machined fused power distribution blocks and bus bars for caps. All panels are MDF, not fiberglass or Formica...
Above: McIntosh amps in motorized rack that elevates for access to batteries and charging electronics below.

Very nicely done, simple amp install using chromed McIntosh amplifiers. Note etched edge on glass. Attention to detail: Capacitor, mounting ring and bus bar for the cap - all chromed.

Roland Karlberg from northern Sweden competes with a 1957 Dodge Royal using Orion gear. Six 2NT 15" subs behind the rear seat, and kick (side?) panels with a 12" sub, one 8" midbass and two 5 1/4" component sets. This car is LOUD.

The Signat "Flag" - one of the world's most powerful amps. Close up of the custom made transformers. Powerful stuff.

These rather blurry pictures show a very nice Orion install, using the new Concept amps and processor, in a Chevrolet Impala SS. This is a Team Xtreme Sweden project.

The dB Dragracing area attracted a lot of people as usual, with Claes Nord running the show. Someone has turned a brand new Saab 9-5 into a dB Drag car...
Some very nice looking door panels in a Saab 9000. Lars Karlsson's fantastic Pioneer ODR installation.

PM-Shopen, a Stockholm car audio shop, is famous for creative and colorful installs. Their Audi 80 included Pioneer ODR components and TAD subs.

All components have been repainted by a brush artist - take a look at the RS-P1 processor at left.

Fortunately they don't do install judging in dB Drag... The Naughty in Black team copied a familiar movie theme - see their logo at top left in this picture.
A very elaborate custom made passive crossover. Nice install in a Saab 9000. But the color... yack!

The "Rock Ford" - a very far-from-original Ford Fiesta, competes in dB Drag. Hardly driveable, it features a removed rear axle, no rear suspension, and lots of rather tasteless Rockford Fosgate stickers.

But it looks cool - and plays loud. The amp install is also rather nice.

Alpine head unit buttons very nicely integrated into a Nardi wheel in a VW Golf. A creative vent design for a subwoofer cabinet. A bass nut?
Amplifiers behind bars in an Audi 100. Another very nice McIntosh amplifier installation.
Jerker Sjödin competes with an Opel Vectra that he calls "Woody". Not hard to see why. He's done a fabulously well finished install using birchwood. His Genesis P300X amplifier sits in an amp rack made of highly polished wood; his DLS subwoofers reside in a very elaborate enclosure. Look at the finish!
A closeup of the capacitor's custom made shroud. The head unit's front panel was re-created in wood.
A DLS dome midrange & tweeter pair in the A pillar. A DLS six inch midbass driver in a nice setting.

Left - Jerker also built a new steering wheel center and located the head unit's remote control buttons there.

Above - a Peugeot 405 Mi16 with a creative paint job. This is also a Genesis/DLS system. No, it's not Gateway 2000 sponsored...
